Perhaps you are moving for the first time, and don’t know where to start with packing and storage, or you have moved before, but could still use a few tips. Whether you are just storing your stuff for a short time in a removal van, or for longer in a storage facility, here are some fool-proof ideas to make it work.
•Do not store anything flammable (paints, thinners, gasoline, turpentine, etc.)
•Dismantling furniture and other items makes them easier to store.
•Standing your sofa on its end saves space.
•Clean all items before storing (to avoid mold and pests).
•Store valuables in unmarked boxes.
•Refrigerators and freezers should be totally clean and dry before storing. The doors should be left slightly open for air – your ovens, washers and dryers should be taped shut.
•Any breakables (dishes, glasses, lamps, etc.) should be individually packed in bubble wrap or newspaper, and stored on top of heavier objects.
•Lamp shades can be wrapped individually and stored inside each other.
•Large tables and beds: take off the legs and individually wrap each one (for protection); tape the screws and nuts to the bottom of the table so you don’t lose them.
•All boxes should be secured with good quality tape and labeled clearly (unless very valuable).
•Larger boxes should be used for bedding and large appliances, like television sets.
•Always store the heaviest boxes on the bottom and lighter ones on top (usually the biggest on the bottom, the smaller on top).
If you are going to use a storage unit:
•Check the access hours and get a phone number to use in an emergency.
•Check the security system: Is there a special code to enter the property? Are there security cameras?
•The unit should be dry and clean, with no sign of water damage, mold, or pests (look for animal droppings).
•Ask lots of questions until you’re satisfied.
