An old Chinese philosophy has transformed the home in contemporary times. How feng shui took control of the home stems from thousands of years ago, putting into reality the idea of balance, fusion and a natural equilibrium between earth elements. Feng shui also means positive energy that is released throughout a home recharging your life batteries.
The five feng shui elements are: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Before applying a balance of these elements there are first some basics to follow.
First, throw out all garbage and clutter and items that you do not love. Having a bash of items lying around leaves an everlasting ‘cluttered’ feeling inside. Doing away with unnecessary material objects will leave you feeling more relaxed.
Secondly, let in plenty of light. Don’t be afraid to open windows. Skirt open curtains to let sun filter in and reflect feng shui colours painted on the wall. Letting air move around the house increases a refreshing feeling, leaving you feel renewed.
Third, ask yourself: How does your house make you feel? There must be a balance between the energy of the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and office. Each element has a specific space in the home coordinated by different colours, knowing where and how to apply them will help.
This intriguing element fire will illustrate how a colour creates a lovely feng shui balance. Different tones reflect each element that give off different feelings. In the South and Northeast areas of the house, apply the tones of red and orange. Like fire represents personal energy and career support, use these tones in paintings, a deep red wall, or simple accessories.
Another element, wood, is seemingly subtle and embracing in a family home since it represents development and stable growth. Wood helps to deter all the bad energy that would leave the house, keeping wealth and prosperity inside. Try using wood in a staircase or as the material for a door.
